A Free-as-in-Beer labor-of-love history of CRPG (Computer Role Playing Games)

My "gateway" drug

For those of you who grew up during the inception of Computer Role Playing Games, this book is for you!

Across its 528 pages you’ll find information about over 400 RPGs, from the early PLATO games to modern AAA releases, as well as hidden gems, curiosities and even fan-translations. The reviews were written by a team of 112 volunteers from all around the globe – fans, modders, journalists, critics, indies and AAA developers.

It is really amazing to see how much work (link) Felipe Pepe and his 115 contributors put into this work.

Temple of Apshai... haggling with the innkeeper... MAN, that must have been the first one I played (or watch others play...!). Great pic to catch our attention! Almost as good as the Wizard pic from before! Back to playing Invasion of the Air Eaters... THE WAVE

    1. Definitely watched _someone else_ play.

I think that left me with some deep rooted game-hoarding issues. :-D

Wizardry, NetHack, Ultima IV & V. Many happy hours spent with those--at the houses of people who actually had computers that ran them! -Bruce

    1. Me too. I coveted an Apple ][. I had a TRaSh-80 Model 1 with a cassette player.

Now, everyone has much more compute power in their pockets.

What an amazing world we are in!

    1. I remember sitting (with TheWave, PC, MF, WH-now-JH, BW, ... maybe more?) at the lone Apple][ computer at the middle school library - watching Hansen play Temple of Apshai.

      And I was totally mesmerized.

And don't get me started on Wizardry! 3d maze? Rolling 6 D&D characters? Spells galore? Equipment? Magic items? Wandering monsters?

      THEN A SEQUEL SCENARIO???

      Pure and utter bliss.
