RepRap is an open source system for a 3d printer. This requires some initial build out but after the first one, it will be able to fashion its own parts.
A friend of mine believes that big manufacturing will clamp down on this manufacturing via patent trolls. And it is pretty convincing since our society is completely driven by profit.
Personally, I think we will have a lot of printer errors which will definitely fill our landfills even faster. (Think of the advent of printers and the ties to the ever increasing number of printouts we have)
But aside from the doom and gloom, if it could only "replicate" my dinner, we'd be set.
